DESCRIPTION
These cheesy savory snacks, known as cheese straws or cheese twists, are crispy, buttery baked treats made with rich cheese and simple pantry ingredients. They are golden, crunchy, and full of sharp cheesy flavor with a light spicy kick if seasoned. Perfect as a snack, party appetizer, or tea-time bite.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cold butter (cubed)
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
- 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tsp paprika or cayenne pepper (optional for spice)
- 2–4 tbsp cold water (as needed)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and paprika/cayenne.
- Add cold butter and rub it into the flour until it looks like crumbs.
- Mix in grated cheese until evenly combined.
- Add cold water little by little to form a soft dough.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface.
- Cut into strips and twist each strip gently.
- Place on baking tray with space between each piece.
- Bake for 12–18 minutes or until golden and crisp.
- Let cool completely before serving for maximum crunch.
TIPS
- Use very cold butter for a flakier texture.
- Don’t overwork the dough or the straws may become hard.
- Extra sharp cheddar gives stronger flavor.
- Add herbs like oregano or thyme for variation.
