Fiery Garlic Soy Beef Stir Fry with Sweet Caramelized Onions

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tsp chili flakes or chili paste
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • Green onions & sesame seeds for garnish
  • Cooked rice or noodles for serving

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a bowl, mix sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, and black pepper. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add onions and cook slowly until golden and caramelized, about 10–12 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add remaining oil to the pan. Cook beef in batches over high heat for 2–3 minutes until browned.
  4. Stir in garlic and chili flakes, cooking for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Return caramelized onions to the skillet. Add oyster sauce, honey, sesame oil, and water. Toss everything together until coated and glossy.
  6. Cook for another 2 minutes, then remove from heat.
  7. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot with rice or noodles.

TIPS

  • Slice beef thinly while slightly frozen for easier cutting.
  • High heat gives the beef a delicious restaurant-style sear.
  • Add bell peppers or broccoli for extra vegetables.
  • Adjust chili level to make it mild or extra spicy.
  • For deeper flavor, marinate the beef overnight in the fridge.
