The Spiritual Heart in Islam
In Surah Al-An’am (Verse 125), Allah (SWT) reveals a profound truth about guidance and misguidance—linking them to the expansion and constriction of the heart. Just as oxygen is vital for physical survival, Eman (faith) is the lifeblood of the soul. This verse teaches us how submission to Islam brings peace, while rebellion leads to spiritual suffocation.
The Quranic Analogy: Expansion vs. Constriction

1. The Guided Heart – Open to Islam
“Whoever Allah wills to guide, He opens their heart to Islam.”
What Does This Mean?
- “Sharh al-Sadr” (Expansion of the Chest):
- A believer’s heart accepts truth easily, like fertile soil accepting seeds.
- Leads to inner peace (Sakinah)—just as Salah relieves stress.
- Example: You feel restless until you pray—your soul craves its spiritual oxygen.
2. The Misguided Heart – Tight & Constricted (ضَيِّقًا حَرَجًا)
“Whoever He wills to misguide, He makes their chest tight and constricted, as if climbing into the sky.”
The Science Behind the Analogy:
- At high altitudes, oxygen decreases, causing breathlessness.
- Similarly, rejecting Islam makes the heart “suffocate”:
- Discomfort when hearing Quran.
- Irritation at Islamic reminders (e.g., Hijab, Salah).
- Allah describes such people:“It is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts in the chests.” *(Surah Al-Hajj 46)*
3 Key Life Lessons from This Verse
1. Guidance is a Divine Gift, But We Must Seek It
- Allah opens hearts to those who sincerely seek truth.
- Action Step: Pray for guidance (Dua of Prophet Musa AS):
“رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي” (“My Lord, expand my chest for me.” – Surah Taha 25*)
2. Eman is the Soul’s Oxygen
- Without it, life feels heavy and joyless.
- Signs of a Healthy Heart:
- Finds peace in Quran & Salah.
- Loves Islamic gatherings.
3. Misguidance Feels Like “Climbing into the Sky”
- Those who reject truth:
- Mock Islamic practices.
- Feel “suffocated” by religious reminders.
- Solution: Soften your heart through:
- Istighfar (seeking forgiveness)
- Listening to Quran regularly
Modern-Day Examples of “Closed Hearts”
- “Why so religious? Live a little!” – Resistance to Islamic reminders.
- Discomfort around practicing Muslims (beards, Hijab, etc.).
- Preferring distractions (music, gossip) over Dhikr.
How to Keep Your Heart Open?
✅ Recite Quran daily – Even a few verses.
✅ Pray on time – Don’t delay Salah.
✅ Avoid sins – They harden the heart.
✅ Seek knowledge – Attend Islamic lectures.
Dua for a Guided Heart
“اللَّهُمَّ أَلِّفْ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِنَا وَأَصْلِحْ ذَاتَ بَيْنِنَا”
(O Allah, unite our hearts and mend our relations.)
Choose Expansion Over Constriction
Allah’s guidance is like fresh air—without it, the soul suffocates. This Ramadan:
- Check your heart: Does Islam bring you peace or discomfort?
- Fix your relationship with Quran – It’s the “oxygen” your soul needs.
- Help others – Invite them to Islam with wisdom.
May Allah open our hearts to His guidance and protect us from the misery of a constricted chest. Ameen!
