Ingredients
For the crust:
- 1 pre-made pie crust (or homemade)
For the filling:
- 1/2 pound (225g) ground beef
- 1/2 pound (225g) Italian sausage, casing removed
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup bell peppers, diced (any color)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup pepperoni slices, chopped or halved
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce or pizza sauce
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a pie pan with your crust and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and sausage until browned, breaking them apart with a spatula. Drain excess fat.
- Add the diced onion, garlic, and bell peppers to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and chili flakes (if using). Mix well.
- Add tomato sauce and cook for another 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
- Layer half of the shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses on the bottom of the pie crust.
- Pour the meat and vegetable mixture over the cheese layer. Spread evenly.
- Sprinkle chopped pepperoni over the filling and top with the remaining cheese.
- Cover with a second crust if desired, or leave open-faced for a deeper pie appearance. Crimp edges to seal. Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until crust is golden and cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Allow the pie to rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
Notes
- For extra cheesiness, mix part of the mozzarella into the meat filling.
- Add mushrooms or olives for additional flavor and texture.
- Use spicy Italian sausage for a more robust flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.
- This pie freezes well—wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months.
