Ingredients

For the crust:

  • 1 pre-made pie crust (or homemade)

For the filling:

  • 1/2 pound (225g) ground beef
  • 1/2 pound (225g) Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup bell peppers, diced (any color)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup pepperoni slices, chopped or halved
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce or pizza sauce
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a pie pan with your crust and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and sausage until browned, breaking them apart with a spatula. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the diced onion, garlic, and bell peppers to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and chili flakes (if using). Mix well.
  5. Add tomato sauce and cook for another 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
  6. Layer half of the shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses on the bottom of the pie crust.
  7. Pour the meat and vegetable mixture over the cheese layer. Spread evenly.
  8. Sprinkle chopped pepperoni over the filling and top with the remaining cheese.
  9. Cover with a second crust if desired, or leave open-faced for a deeper pie appearance. Crimp edges to seal. Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until crust is golden and cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Allow the pie to rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra cheesiness, mix part of the mozzarella into the meat filling.
  • Add mushrooms or olives for additional flavor and texture.
  • Use spicy Italian sausage for a more robust flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.
  • This pie freezes well—wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months.
